History

The long cherished dream to fulfill the need for higher education in this remotest corner of the tribal district of Mayurbhanj and the frontier of Odisha-Jharkhand-Bengal came to reality on 13th August 1979 with the successful establishment of Seemanta Mahavidyalaya by ceaseless efforts of the local stalwants. The college started off in modest thatched house with 99 students and 14 numbers of staff. In 1980 the college was shifted to the existing building constructed by the management committee with land area of 15 acres obtained from the Govt. of Odisha.

The college was accorded concurrence by the Govt. of Odisha in 1979-80 affiliation was obtained from Utkal University in 1980-81 for opening of intermediate class in Arts. Subsequently the college began to expand its academic branches keeping harmony with the sweet flow of the river Subarnarekha. Intermediate in Science was introduced in 1981-82 and Commerce in 1984-85. In 1986-87 the college attained the status of a full fledged degree college. The college imparts the teaching faculties of Honors courses in the subjects of Economics, Political Science, History, Anthropology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany and Zoology. After opening of North Orissa University at Baripada, w.e.f. 11 July 1999 the college has, if so facto, been affiliated to this University. With the assistance of UGC, Sericulture as vocational subject in +3 Degree Science stream and Tourism and Travel Management (T.T.M.) in +3 Degree Arts stream were opened from the session 2001-02 and 2002-03 respectively. Self financing career oriented certificate courses were introduced in the subjects of Functional English, Community Development, Tourism and Industrial Chemistry with 30 seats each as add-on-courses in +3 Degree stream under UGC assistance from the session 2001-2002 and 2002-03 respectively. Government of Odisha has accorded concurrence to open Odia Honours in +3 Degree Arts stream and IT as elective subject in +2 Science stream from the session 2011-12 and 2012-13 respectively.

In course of time the college has grown in size and sanctioned strength of the student increased to 1696 with number of teaching and non-teaching staff increased to 48 and 26 respectively. The college is now accommodated in a very massive building with a picturesque campus.

The most essential need of hostel problem is partly solved by one Boys’ Hostel. The construction of one Girls’ Hostel has been made possible with T & R.W. grants. Recently 77 lakhs of rupees have been approved by the University Grants Commission for the construction of a Hostel to accommodate the Girls’ students.

A library was founded notwithstanding the scantly funds at our disposal to cater to the basic needs of the students. We ere extremely grateful to acknowledge that the financial assistance obtained recently from UGC has enabled us to enrich the status of the college library with 13,605 text books, 8168 reference books thus a total 20,517 books and over 212 magazines and journals. We ardently hope that it will fulfill the need of honors students to a great extent. The library will be enriched in future with purchase of more books with UGC assistance.

The college has already attained 37 years of its existence. During the past 35 years it has marched ahead on the path of progress. The discipline among the students, the sincerity of the teaching staff and above all the smooth administration are laudable to create an encouraging academic atmosphere.

Seemanta Mahavidyalaya, as a premier educational institution of the district is not only providing teaching facilities but also undertaking different social awareness program through our NSS and YRC activities to solve the local problem in different fields. In the year 2009 the National Executive Committee of NAAC on the recommendation of Peer Team has please to declare our Institution as accredited at the B level. We hope the irresistible missionary fervor of the members of the Governing Body, discipline of the students and devotion of the staff, the college will make great strides towards a brighter and prosperous future.
